In his letter to the Ephesians Paul writes that believers should put off…the old man, rejecting that former way of life and its corruption. The language here suggests a choice. Those who trust in Christ have been given a new position in His creation, but they must choose daily to live His way.

Believers can and should participate in the process of putting off the old man and putting on the new man, (woman) but ultimately both the process and the outcome belong to God; He is the one who transforms people. Every believer can be assisted in the all-important work of being renewed in his or her mind (Rom. 12:2; 2 Cor. 4:16) by practicing the spiritual disciplines: Bible study and memorization, prayer and worship, service and ministry, witnessing and missions, giving to God, fasting and church attendance.

In Ephesians 4:22-24, Paul speaks about renewal in terms of putting off the old self and embracing a new life in Christ. Here is the passage:

"You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."

Paul highlights three key steps in the process of renewal:

  1. Put off your old self: This involves letting go of past behaviors, habits, and desires that are contrary to God's will. The old self is characterized by sinful and deceitful desires that lead to corruption.
  2. Be made new in the attitude of your minds: Renewal starts with a transformation of the mind. This means adopting a new way of thinking and allowing the Holy Spirit to shape our thoughts, attitudes, and perspectives.
  3. Put on the new self: Embrace a new identity in Christ, characterized by righteousness and holiness. The new self is created to reflect God's nature and live according to His will.

These verses emphasize the importance of personal transformation and spiritual growth. By letting go of the old self, renewing our minds, and embracing our new identity in Christ, we can live a life that honors God and reflects His character.

Stay strong and be blessed.
