In Paul’s letter to Philemon his main goal was not to overturn the Roman institution of slavery, but to see individual hearts changed by the gospel of Christ. Rather, he radically challenged people's attitudes towards others, admonishing masters and slaves to serve one another with love and respect (Eph 6:5-9; Col 3:22 - 4:1) He also diligently declared the truth of the gospel for all the people – that in Christ there is neither male nor female, Greek nor Jew, slave nor free, (Gal 3:28) – knowing that this is the reality that truly sets people free (John 8:32)

In Philemon 1:6 Paul says, "I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ." This verse highlights the idea of mutual growth and enrichment through faith and community.
