Fear usually enters in when a person focuses on his or her situation and abilities rather than on God’s sovereignty and attributes (Ps. 56:3; Isa. 12:2). Following fear to its logical conclusion, will obliterate all opportunities for service. But recalling your spiritual heritage and friendships, as well as God’s calling and gifting, can spur Christians forward.

Finding renewal in 2 Tim 1:7

2 Timothy 1:7 is a powerful verse that speaks about the spirit God has given us. Here's the verse for context:

"For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."

Renewal is found in this verse through several key concepts:

  1. Spirit of Power: Renewal involves embracing the strength and power that comes from God. This power enables us to overcome challenges, face fears, and live boldly in our faith.

  2. Spirit of Love: Renewal is also characterized by love. This love is both received from God and extended to others. It transforms our relationships, attitudes, and actions, allowing us to live in harmony with God's will.

  3. Spirit of Self-Control: Renewal includes the development of self-control, which helps us to manage our desires, actions, and thoughts. This self-control is crucial for living a disciplined and righteous life.

  4. Freedom from Fear: The verse emphasizes that God has not given us a spirit of fear. Renewal involves letting go of fear and trusting in God's power, love, and guidance. This freedom from fear allows us to live with confidence and hope.

All doors offer two choices: to walk by faith or to be controlled by fear (timidity). Persecution, infighting, and false teaching all threatened the Ephesian church that young Timothy shepherded and will threaten Christians in the last days. The fearful will drop out. But those who grab hold of the courage (power), compassion (love), and self-control (sound mind) that God makes available will stand fast until God completes His work in them (Phil. 1:6)

These elements together form a holistic picture of renewal, where we are empowered, loved, disciplined, and free from fear through the Spirit that God has given us.

Stay strong and be blessed.
